Walk round any marina between Torrevieja and Cartagena and four names come up again and again: Beneteau, Jeanneau, Quicksilver and Bayliner. Together they account for a large share of the family day boats, fishing boats and small cruisers on this coast. Each has its own character, and its own service points.
Beneteau (Flyer, Antares, Barracuda, Gran Turismo)
Flyer day boats and sun decks are everywhere on the Mar Menor, usually with Yamaha, Suzuki or Mercury outboards. Antares and Barracuda are popular with anglers and families who want a cabin and a wheelhouse. Larger Gran Turismo models up to around 12 metres often have Volvo Penta sterndrives or IPS-style pod drives, or outboards on newer versions.
What to check:
- Outboard servicing and steering, which on twin installations needs to be correctly aligned.
- Deck drains and scuppers, which can block with sand and leaves.
- Upholstery and sunpads, which take a lot of sun on open day boats.
- On Antares models, wheelhouse windows and their seals, plus the condition of electrics behind the dashboard.
- On sterndrive Gran Turismos, bellows and exhaust elbows (see our sterndrive guide).
Jeanneau (Cap Camarat, Merry Fisher, Leader, NC)
The Cap Camarat range of open and walkaround boats is one of the most popular outboard boats in the Mediterranean. The Merry Fisher is a favourite for fishing and family use, with its wheelhouse and cabin. The Leader range covers sterndrive and outboard sports cruisers.
What to check:
- Outboard and fuel system maintenance on Cap Camarats, which are often used hard all summer.
- Bilge pumps and float switches, especially on walkaround models where water can collect.
- Seat and bimini fittings, which work loose with vibration.
- Sterndrive bellows and gimbal bearings on older Leaders with Volvo Penta or MerCruiser.
Quicksilver (Activ, Captur, Pilothouse)
Quicksilver boats are built by Brunswick and come almost always with Mercury outboards, making them a good match for Mercury dealers and specialists. The Activ range covers open, sun deck and cabin boats; the Captur range covers fishing-oriented boats and pilothouse models.
What to check:
- Mercury outboard servicing, including software diagnostics on newer engines.
- Steering systems: hydraulic steering on larger engines needs fluid checks and bleed when there’s play.
- Electrical connections behind the console, which can corrode where water gets in.
- Cockpit drainage and hatches.
Bayliner (VR, Element, Ciera, older Capri)
Bayliners are affordable American-built boats, and many older ones on this coast still run MerCruiser petrol sterndrives. Newer models are often outboard powered.
What to check:
- Exhaust manifolds and risers on raw water cooled MerCruisers, which corrode over time.
- Bellows and drive oil on sterndrives.
- Transom and floor condition on older boats, where water ingress can cause soft spots.
- Fuel lines and anti-siphon valves on older petrol systems.
A note on older boats
Many of the boats in this area are 10 to 25 years old and have changed owners several times. Service history is often missing. If you’ve just bought one, a full baseline service is the best investment you can make: you’ll know exactly what’s been replaced and what to plan for.
