Walk along any pontoon in Torrevieja, San Pedro del Pinatar or Cartagena and you’ll see that outboards now power the majority of leisure motorboats under 12 metres. They are lighter, simpler to service and easier to replace than an inboard. But they live in a harsh place: hanging off the transom in hot salt water and strong sun.
Here is what each of the most common brands needs, and the problems we see most often.
What every outboard service includes
Regardless of brand, a proper annual or hours-based service on a four-stroke outboard covers:
- Engine oil and filter change.
- Lower unit gear oil change, with a check for water or metal on the drain plug.
- Water pump impeller replacement, typically every year or two depending on the manufacturer and use.
- Fuel filter and water separator replacement.
- Spark plugs, at the interval given in the manual.
- Anodes inspected and replaced.
- Propeller removed, shaft greased and splines checked.
- Grease points on the swivel bracket, tilt tube and steering.
- Thermostat inspection and a check of the telltale flow.
- Power trim and tilt fluid and operation.
- Diagnostic software check on modern engines, to read stored fault codes and running history.
Yamaha
Yamaha is the most common outboard we work on locally, from small 4-stroke tenders to large V6 and V8 engines on twin and triple installations.
- Strengths: reliable, good dealer and parts support across Spain, well-documented service schedules.
- What we see: salt build-up in the cooling passages of engines that aren’t flushed, corroded thermostat housings on older models and worn trim and tilt seals. Fuel system issues are often caused by old or contaminated fuel rather than the engine itself.
Mercury
Mercury’s FourStroke and Verado ranges are everywhere, and Mercury also makes the MerCruiser sterndrives found on many older sports boats.
- Strengths: strong performance, good digital controls and diagnostics, widely available parts.
- What we see: water pump impellers that are left too long, corrosion where the paint has been chipped on the leg, and sensor or wiring faults that set alarms. Verado engines need specialist knowledge for the power steering and supercharger.
Suzuki
Suzuki has become very popular on mid-size RIBs and centre consoles.
- Strengths: economical, light and smooth. Many larger models use an offset drive that gives good efficiency.
- What we see: corrosion on older engines where anodes haven’t been changed, and cooling problems from blocked passages. Keep up with the scheduled valve clearance checks on higher-hour engines.
Honda
Honda Marine outboards are known for quiet, reliable four-stroke engines derived from their car engines.
- Strengths: refined, reliable, with excellent fuel economy.
- What we see: timing belts that must be replaced at the specified interval on many models, and corrosion in the cooling system when engines are not flushed.
Tohatsu (and Nissan Marine)
Tohatsu makes a wide range of small and mid-size outboards and is common on tenders and small day boats.
- Strengths: simple, robust and economical, easy to service.
- What we see: carburettor varnishing on older carburetted engines left with fuel in them, and water pump wear.
Evinrude and older two-strokes
Evinrude stopped building outboards in 2020, but many E-TEC engines still run well here. Parts are becoming harder to source, so a careful service and a stock of key spares is a good idea. Older two-strokes from all brands can still be serviced, though some are better candidates for repowering.
The Mediterranean factor
Whatever the brand, the three things that shorten outboard life here are:
- Not flushing with fresh water after every salt-water trip.
- Leaving the leg in the water when the boat is moored, which invites marine growth and corrosion.
- Old fuel. Petrol degrades in heat, and ethanol blends can absorb water.
Repower or repair?
If your outboard is old, thirsty or unreliable, a modern repower can transform a boat. We can advise honestly on whether repair or replacement makes more sense. See our boat servicing page, or book an outboard service.
